How to Use Our Study Guide

The purpose of this study is to inspire and guide deeper thinking and discussion of the things of God, specifically through the work of Christ, as revealed in the book of Galatians. It is intended to catalyze not just a “head” response but also a “heart” and “hands” response. When our understanding of the work of Christ is expanded, our faith grows. And when our faith grows, we more acutely see the “things above” as superseding any challenge, trial, or burden here in this life (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

One of the amazing things about Scripture is that there is always more to see, learn, and wrestle with. People who have studied Scripture for decades often remark that there is no end to new insights or truths gleaned. God’s teachings never grow dull or fall flat. They are intricately woven through every page of Scripture as a gift to those who seek Him. In that light, we have diligently attempted to include questions that spark your own learning and discernment of God’s Word. You may wrestle with some questions more than others. Likewise, you may find value in some questions more than others. The important thing to remember is that pursuing God through His Word is never a futile endeavor. It is an ongoing process meant to sharpen our understanding of who God is, as well as transform our hearts to become more like Christ.

If you are reading this, it means you have chosen to do this study on your own or with a small group. Whether studying individually or with others, the study guide is designed to help you engage with God’s truth through praying, reading, observing, interpreting, applying, and meditating on God’s Word.

Prayer
Prayer is an essential part of the study process. Before jumping into Scripture reading, we highly recommend going to the Lord in prayer, asking Him to remove obstacles to your learning, open your eyes to His truth, and lead you in heart transformation. We believe this is an essential step in the study process that allows the Lord to work through your humbly confessed dependence on Him to know Him better.

Reading
Each passage is provided for you in the ESV translation on the first page of each section. Whether you use your own Bible or look to the translation in the study guide, we highly encourage you to read through the passage several times before answering questions. Before beginning the study altogether, we recommend reading through the entire book of Galatians at least a few times to grasp the entirety of the letter and its accompanying themes. For this purpose, we have included the whole letter to the Galatians without chapter numbers, headings, or subheadings.

Observation
After you have read through each passage several times, note your observations. What is going on? Who is involved? Where is this taking place? What is the tone? What phrases or words keep appearing? Observations help us better understand historical and grammatical context, which leads to more accurate interpretation.

Interpretation
The process of interpretation centers around identifying what the author intended to say to the original audience. It does not start with, “What does this passage mean to me?” Although personal application is a natural outflow from proper interpretation, Scripture cannot be applied correctly without being interpreted correctly. Biblical interpretation involves consideration of several things. A brief guide, “Basic Principles of Studying the Bible,” is included in this guide for your reference. While not an exhaustive resource, the principles provided can help guide your study. A list of recommended resources for further study is also included for those wanting to take their interpretive skills to the next level.

Application
After studying what the author intended to convey to the original audience, discern how the passage can be applied to your life. Be mindful of context and not isolate one passage of Scripture from others relating to similar applications. When questions of application arise, it is helpful to look to other passages of Scripture that speak to the same thing.

Meditation
Throughout the rest of your day or week, think about different aspects of the passage. What words or phrases keep coming to mind? How has this passage affected your faith and beliefs? What does the passage reveal to you about God? After all, every page of Scripture reveals something about God – his nature, promises, and works. The more we learn about who God is, the deeper our love grows, and the more firmly our faith becomes anchored in him. For this, we have included a journal page next to the passage itself. Please use this as you feel led.

If you are going through this study guide in a group, the questions are meant to be a guide. Some questions will prompt more discussion; others will be more personal reflection. Not every question needs to be discussed. Likewise, you may discover and discuss other questions not included that naturally arise from discussion. Surrender the process to the Holy Spirit and ask for spiritual insight and wisdom.

If you use this guide for individual study, you will find some questions more applicable to your life. We encourage you to share with others what God has been teaching you through this study as opportunities present themselves.

We are excited you have chosen to embark on this journey through Galatians and are praying that it is deeply impactful in your faith and life!
